Diabetes is a major public health challenge. Diabetes reduces the life expectancy of people with type 1 by about 15 years and type 2 by about 10 years. In 2017/18 there were approaching 84,000 people aged 17 years and over who had been diagnosed with diabetes in Kent. This represents 6.6% of the registered population in this age group.
A number of organisations produce diabetes statistics both at national and local level.
- Public Health England produce a diabetes profile within their fingertips tool. They also produce a range of resources on cardiovascular disease, including disease profiles and primary care intelligence packs.
- NHS Digital publish results from the National Diabetes Audit. They also publish prescribing data for diabetes.
- The National General Practice Profiles present a range of data, including prevalence.
