Maternity

There are around 16,000 babies born in Kent each year (Kent Analytics). A baby grows and develops more the first 1,000 days after conception than at any other time (Early Years) . This period lays the foundation for lifelong health and wellbeing. Positive and negative influences such as food, stress, and their environment can have lasting effects on a child’s physical and mental health forever (UKHSA). A healthy pregnancy and early childhood give children the best chance to grow well and succeed later in life. A mother’s health plays a key role, and wider factors like housing, income, and access to services also matter (NIHR) (NIHR). Also, mothers need to be looked after during this time as research shows over a third of women experience long lasting health issues after childbirth (WHO). Supporting families during this time can improve health, learning and work achievements for children and their mothers. This page contains resources which identify what Kent County Council is doing for maternity and the external resources which may be useful.
